THE 715-HP ASTON MARTIN DBS SUPERLEGGERA VOLANTE IS THE FASTEST CONVERTIBLE EVER

Etihad Airways Supercar

If you want to experience hurricane-like winds in your face but without the hurricane itself, well, you’re in luck. Meet the new Aston Martin DBS Superleggera Volante, the fastest convertible the British carmaker has ever made. It’s exactly how we imagined it would be, meaning it’s the DBS Superleggera without its hardtop. In its place is a folding convertible mechanism.

With a claimed top speed of 211 mph, the DBS Superleggera Volante is powered by the familiar twin-turbocharged 5.2-liter V12 with 715 hp and 664 lb-ft of torque. Zero to 62 mph will happen in only 3.6 seconds (only 0.2 seconds less than the coupe) and 0-100 mph takes just 6.7 seconds. Power, once again, goes directly to the rear wheels through a new eight-speed ZF automatic gearbox. Not surprisingly, it weighs more than the coupe, specifically 375 pounds more for a total dry weight of 4,107 pounds.

Fortunately, the cabrio produces 6.6 pounds less downforce at top speed compared to the coupe. Only 14 seconds are required to open and 16 seconds to close the soft top. Aston Martin also tweaked the aerodynamic elements, specifically the front spoiler and air dam. The side strakes are also deeper than the coupe’s.

At the rear there’s a large double diffuser that enables air to exit and "naturalize lift as efficiently as possible.” The Aeroblade II system has also been revised in order to accommodate the folding cloth top.

"DBS Superleggera produces a spectacular and relentless level of performance and so for the Volante, we focused on bringing that extra level of sensory overload that only an open-top Super GT can deliver inside the cabin,” said Aston Martin’s Executive Vice President and Chief Creative Officer Marek Reichman. "With the unique dynamics, beautiful yet brutish design and the unmistakable harmonics of Aston Martin’s 5.2-liter V12 engine, we believe we have delivered a unique and unforgettable driving experience that is synonymous with the traditions of the Volante name.”

It all sounds incredible to us, but if you want one you’ll need to have at least $329,100 on hand. To compare, the DBS Superleggera coupe starts off at around $304,995. Sales are set to get underway in the third quarter of this year.
