The De Tomaso P72 Is Finally Here - and It’s a Masterclass in Analog Artistry

After years of silence, one of the most legendary names in automotive history is roaring back to life - and it’s doing so in spectacular fashion.

De Tomaso, the brand behind some of the most coveted performance machines of the late 20th century, is making a triumphant return with the long-awaited production-spec P72. First teased as a concept in 2019 at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, this hand-built supercar is now fully realized and every bit as stunning as we hoped.

Retro Soul, Modern Muscle

Inspired by the rare and fascinating P70 collaboration between Alejandro De Tomaso and Carroll Shelby, the P72 carries forward that spirit of passion-driven design and old-school engineering. But this is no retro replica. Built from the ground up on a brand-new carbon fiber chassis, the P72 features a monocoque tub crafted from a single piece of carbon a feat of modern craftsmanship designed to keep weight down, rigidity up, and the driving position low and purposeful.

From every angle, it’s a rolling sculpture. Whether you choose a historically inspired livery or raw exposed carbon fiber, the P72 is unmistakable and unapologetically different in a world full of digital dashboards and synthetic driving feel.

Built for the Drive, Not the Lap Time

Under the hood is a 5.0-liter supercharged V8, hand-assembled and exclusive to De Tomaso’s new ‘P’ platform. It pumps out 700 horsepower and 605 lb-ft of torque but this car isn't chasing Nürburgring records. It’s chasing emotion.

With manual three-way adjustable pushrod suspension and a header design that nods to the golden era of racing, the P72 was engineered not for spec sheet bragging rights, but for the joy of driving. Short gear ratios and an exposed-linkage 6-speed manual transmission keep you engaged and in control. This is tactile, analog performance in its purest form.

Inside: Craftsmanship, Not Touchscreens

Step into the cabin and you won’t find a sea of screens. The P72 proudly bucks the trend with analog gauges, physical controls, and just a discreet phone holder to nod at modern convenience. The materials are exquisite milled aluminum, hand-stitched leather, and bespoke finishes that feel more like a Swiss watch than a car interior.

Every example of the P72 will be fully commissioned to the buyer’s vision, ensuring no two cars are exactly alike. The white and rose gold launch spec seen here is for internal use only - outside of the 72 customer cars that are already spoken for. Deliveries begin in late 2025, and each one will be nothing short of a rolling work of art.

A Welcome Return for the Romantic Drivers

In a world where the analog driving experience is on the endangered list, De Tomaso is throwing purists a lifeline. The P72 is proof that performance doesn't need to be filtered through screens or dulled by automation. It's loud, raw, beautiful and made to be driven.

And for those of us at Freedom Supercars who still believe that driving is about connection, not convenience, we say: Welcome back, De Tomaso. We missed you.
